Star Trek: The Next Generation finally on Blu-ray

1375 hits
After Star Trek: The Original Series will have been released in the UK Paramount Home Entertainment is planing a release of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as a Blu-ray set on September 14th, 2009.

In contrast to previous season boxsets the Blu-ray Box will be a complete package, similar to the "20th Anniversary Box" (49 DVDs). This bundle will be a common dual-layer Blu-ray with 50gb storage capacity, hence all seasons will be on eight Blu-ray Discs.

Similar to the TNG season bundle the Blu-ray edition will also be granted an exclsuive repackaging, presented on the left picture (photo Treknews.de exclusive, see link below!). The case will be high-quality, brushed aluminium. The overall price will be 499€ (71€ per season).

The vidoe-format won't change - the Blu-ray will sill contain the vieo-files in standard SD definition (720x576 pixels). Paramount explains this step "... worthly presented 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' on Blu-ray is placed among other elitary TV-classics" - bsides Star Trek TNG further Paramount classics like "Cheers" (1987) and MacGyver (1985) will be released on 9.14.2009. None of them will be released in HD-resolution on Blu-ray - the main advantage will be, that changing the discs will be increased and that there will be an improved menue-structure. On each Disc will be a complete season. The eighth disc will contain special Features.

Whereas the video-material will be directly copied from the previous DVD release, the special features and boni will be extended. Besides known TNG Special Features four new ones are already listed:

* "Alternation of generations" will present the proverbial passing of the torch between TOS/TNG and TNG/Star Trek 11
* "22 years lager" includes exclsusive interviews with director J.J Abrams, Chris Pike and Zachary Quinto and their relationship to Star Trek TNG
