hi,

as a mentioned in the german part of the forum i had an idea.

is it possible to repalce the *.vob mpeg container files with hdtv mpeg or even wmvhd files of the same movie, but using it with the ramaining menues etc?

so we could have both, the comfort of the dvd but in combination of the image quality.
i know that it wouldnt be possible to play the dvd in a normal dvd player anymore.

i am sking, because in my opinion the menue on the german tomb raider wmvhd dvd really sucks!

try to play around with dvd-lab, it can relax the requirements of the mpeg2-movie, and still generate a valid DVD as long as you don't play the movie... Think that it runs with HD mpeg2

Try a beta of the latest PRO version here:
http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/historypro.html

MS also had a PR message up somewhere about releaseing on of the more expensive DVD auth apps soon with WMV9 support, I'll try to find that PR and you'll know which one will support WMV9 soon (or already)...

And the whole PR in case the above stops working:

Microsoft and Sonic Unveil DVD Authoring Application for Windows Media High-Definition Video

Sonic Launches WMV HD Beta Program for DVD Producer – WMV HD Edition

NAB 2004, Las Vegas, Nevada (April 19, 2004) - Microsoft Corp. and Sonic Solutions today unveiled DVD Producer™ – WMV HD Edition, a special version of Sonic's award-winning professional authoring application that supports the production of DVD titles using Microsoft® Windows Media® High Definition Video (WMV HD). WMV HD delivers dramatically superior image quality with high-definition video at data rates comparable to standard-definition DVD video.

Sonic is launching a beta program for DVD Producer WMV HD Edition to provide high- end professional facilities early access to this ground-breaking technology so that they can build exciting high-definition experiences using WMV HD for playback on Windows XP PCs. Production companies interested in joining the beta program are welcome to contact Sonic via email at hdbeta@sonic.com.

"Sonic's DVD Producer – WMV HD Edition leverages Sonic's many years of industry-leading DVD-authoring expertise to provide video production facilities and content providers with a powerful solution for creating high-definition DVD content for playback on Windows-based PCs," said Dave Fester, general manager of the Windows Client Group at Microsoft. "Sonic's beta program will serve to jump-start WMV HD title creation in the professional authoring industry."

"We've been providing our clients like MGM and Lion's Gate with high-definition services for some time, and Microsoft's WMV HD provides us with a solid way to deliver content in HD," said Morgan Holly, managing director at Ascent Media DVD in Santa Monica, California. "Sonic DVD Producer – WMV HD Edition will allow us to build on the power of this exciting technology for our most demanding customers."

"Millions of consumers are using Windows Media Player 9 Series and Windows XP for video and DVD playback; WMV HD is a great way to deliver high-definition video content to a large audience today," said Rolf Hartley, senior vice president and general manager of the Professional Products Group at Sonic. "DVD Producer – WMV HD Edition and our new beta program will allow high-end post facilities and the Hollywood film community to get involved with WMV HD in order to create stand-alone titles and exciting HD bonus content for standard definition feature film DVDs."

Sonic is showcasing DVD Producer – WMV HD Edition in the Sonic booth (Booth No. SL4736) and Microsoft booth (Booth No. SL5445) at NAB. The demonstration highlights tight integration with Avid Technology Inc.'s nonlinear video workstations and focuses on the preparation of high-definition video and authoring using Sonic's new application. DVD Producer – WMV HD Edition is targeted for release in September of this year.

Production companies interested in joining the beta program should contact Sonic via e mail at hdbeta@sonic.com.

I have a Topfield 7700 HSCI and I now and then record programs from Arte HD on a usb harddisc.
I use TmepgEnc4XP to convert TS stream with HD content to mpg files (*.m2t).
I try to keep as close to the original as possible.
I then use the Womble Mpeg Video wizard DVD to make my own HD DVDs.
The Video wizard has an option to make DVD's (including menu's, chapters and so on) with a nonstandard format. So you can make vob-files in your VIDEO_TS map with bitrates of 25000 and more. When you set the encoder settings to automatic it does not even re-encode javascript:emoticon('Smile')
I then use Powerdvd 7 to burn to a +R DL disc.
My Toshiba HD-EP10 reads this as regular DVD but you still have the high bitrates.

Regards,

Erik
